Education – Music is so much more

As a music educator at a secondary school, I teach not only music but also English and history. Before working in the school system, I spent several years teaching guitar and drums alongside and beyond my studies. From early on, it became clear to me that educational work is just as important to me as making music itself, as well as questions that matter to society as a whole. Issues of sustainability, social justice, and participation are themes I continuously try to reimagine both as a musician and as an educator.

In my master’s thesis, I focused on education for sustainable development within the context of teacher training in music education. This focus continues to shape my work today.

At my school, I head the music department, which plays a central role in shaping the school’s culture through multiple big bands, choir classes, and a dedicated music profile starting in grade 8. For me, music is not just a subject, but a social and creative space – one that offers diverse opportunities to experience self-efficacy and resonance.

Today, I regularly supervise student teachers and trainees in music education and closely support them in their professional development. In addition, since 2026 I have held a teaching position at the University of Education Freiburg, focusing on the didactic mentoring of student teachers during their school placements.

On this page, you will find more projects from my work as a music educator.

School Workshop:

Rap – Racism – Repression

Together with my band Qult, I developed a school workshop on rap and racism that raises awareness of issues such as the unequal distribution of privilege and structural racism. At the same time, students explore these topics through their own beats and lyrics, finding a personal and creative way to engage with the issue. The workshop is completed with a live performance of the songs created during the sessions.

The project has been successfully carried out at several schools and has been supported by the Cultural Office of Freiburg.
